Volunteers

Our Kurinchi Kumaran Temple is a unique temple. It is unique in the sense that all its activities are carried out by a community of volunteers. Every volunteer willingly come forward to volunteer themselves in providing their expertise, skills and services for all temples on going activities and maintenance services.

Temple Volunteers

Temple Volunteers’ duties are to come and open the temple at least 30 minutes before start of the pooja by Volunteer Priests and to ensure that all deities’ sannathis are tidied up including the removing of old flowers and faded garlands, lighting up all the deities’ vilakku (flame of lights), bring a basket of fresh flowers for poojas and bring neiveithiam (specially prepared food for all deities without use of onion and garlics such as cheek peas, sweet rice (pongal, puliotharai ( lime or tamarind rice) and any acceptable food items, milk, bananas or other fruits.

The temple volunteers are required to place all the neiveithiam they have brought on specified plates to serve all deities along with heated milk on miniature milk bowls. The flowers they have brought should be placed in a flower basket for poojas.

Temple volunteers are to act as a helper to the Volunteer Priest of the day and be the care taker of the temple till the end of pooja and prayers and close the temple once all devotees had left the temple. They are the one who will remove the served neiveithiam from the deities and serve them on a different plate to all devotes who turned up that day’s pooja and prayers. They had to clean up all the deities’ plates and miniature bowls and leave the kitchen and temple clean and tidy as they can. Before closing the temple, they had to ensure all the deities lights, beam heaters, heat pumps, oven gas are put or turned off as required. Before leaving and locking temple, they have to put on the security alarm.

Since there a number of activities that need to be done on time before the start of pooja, all our Temple Volunteers do come with their family members including children who will do all the preparatory works within half an hour. All our Temple Volunteers are so committed, passionate and feel blessed for carrying out these divinely duties.

Temple Volunteers are rostered in such a way that each family roster turn comes up only once a month.

Priest Community and Volunteer Priest of the day

It is not an exaggeration to state here that our Kurinchi Kumaran Temple is divinely blessed by the volunteer services provided by a vibrant, supportive and cooperative Priest Community living in our Wellington Region.

All the daily pooja, abishekams to deities on auspicious and festival days and Vishesha (special) pooja and prayers are carried out by our Priest Community through a Volunteer Priest of the day rostered system.

There are seven Volunteer Priest of the Day for a week, who are assigned for each day in a week based on their choice and these Volunteer Priests do get assisted by Standby Volunteer Priests when extra help is needed during festival seasons.

It is important to state here that during auspicious and festival days, additional volunteers priests are called in to help out with abishekam and carrying out Vasantha Mandapa Vishesha Poojas and Ul Veethi Urvalam.
