History

A group of devout Hindus gathered in Wellington and were looking for a place of worship to Lord Murugan.  Their dedication provided them a place at Webb Street in Wellington.  Initially the Lord Murugan devout commenced their prayers in this house with a large picture of Bala Murugan staged in a decorated platform to observe the six day Skanda Shasti during the month of October 1992.  To be exact this was a Monday 26th October 1992.

The presence of devotees in large numbers to this place encouraged the organisers to establish New Zealand Hindu Association Inc. in May 1993 and is registered as a charitable organisation. The members of the Association (NZHA) immediately expressed their willingness and support to actively look for a permanent place to build a proper Temple.

Since then the emergence of the Lord Murugan Temple at Newlands, Wellington has been the gift of the Lord himself through dedicated members of NZHA and the support of the devotees all over Wellington region.
